If the NHSTP procedure is essential for controlling for chance, why is there little, if any, discussion of the nature of chance by Chow and other advocates of the procedure. Also, many criticisms that Chow takes to be aimed against the NHSTP procedure are actually directed against the kind of theory that is tested by the procedure.

This book examines the strengths and weaknesses of four salient epistemological orientations in the field – positivism, relativism, interpretivism, and intersubjectivism – to identify the characteristics of a theoretically-informed epistemology for social science.

Econometric analysis of discrete choice has made considerable use of random utility models to interpret observed choice behavior. Much empirical research concerns choice problems in which persons act with partial knowledge of the utilities of the feasible actions. Economists use random expected utility models to analyze such choice problems. A common practice is to specify fully the expectations that persons hold, in which case choice analysis reduces to inference on preferences alone. However, the expectations assumptions made in empirical research rarely (...) have much foundation. To enable more credible research, this paper considers inference when one specifies a set of expectations that decision makers may plausibly hold. I first pose the idea in abstraction and then specialize to binary response with linear utilities, where the analysis is particularly straightforward. I initially assume that decision makers possess unique subjective probability distributions on the states of nature and make choices that maximize expected utility. I later consider the possibility that persons place only partial probabilistic structure on the states of nature and make undominated choices. (shrink)

The purpose of this paper is to mark a significant difference between classical and several non-classical prepositional calculi. The argument presupposes familiarity with Kripke/Hintikka semantics for modal logic. The non-classical systems are Hintikka's logic of belief and alethic modal systems which have Kripke/Hintikka semantics. The difference is marked by showing that the semantic validity operator in classical logic behaves as a normal alethic necessity-operator while the non-classical semantic validity operators behave as normal deontic ought-operators. The crucial step is showing that (...) a formula, valid by non-classical semantics, can be falsified. I show that the negation of a non-classical thesis can be added to a consistent set of formulae without making the set inconsistent or any other set inconsistent. This is shown by observing that consistent sets of formulae do not need to be related to other consistent sets by any of the alternativeness relations of Kripke/Hintikka model structures for non-classical systems. The deontic behavior of non-classical semantical validity operators is interpreted as showing that being a thesis of a non-classical system means, not that the thesis is a logical truth, but that the thesis is the content of a norm on how we ought to use, crucial terms such as ‘believe’ and ‘necessity’.
